Don't think my setting will be that big I would need them, but I'm not sure there's not a reason to make them, or something like them, even if I only do a PDF and not a print ready one. I (too) really like the look of those color tabs. If a large part of the world is the conflict between two churches, that shouldn't only hinted at until the religious chapter of the Jester David, So readers can have an idea of the basics of the world without having to read the entire book. Starting with a brief overview of the world (it's hook, the regions, the major conflicts) seems like a good idea. I've been personally thinking of the introduction.

Especially for locations and cities that might not clearly be in one nation or region. (Is the Swiss region in "The West" with Gaul or "Germanic Forests"?)Ī third way might be a deliberate East-to-West presentation of lands (or North-to-South). But it's trickier when looking for a single nation when you might be uncertain where it falls in the order. And it can be easier for new readers as nations that impact each other are close by. Athens and Sparta would be close together rather than opposite ends of the book. The latter is more useful when running, as related nations are just closer together. It's a little more awkward when first reading the book, as you'll bounce around the geography. The former is useful when looking up random lands, because each nation is easily located. The latter divides the world into various regions and then lists the nations. The former lists every nation arranged by its name. There's really only two structures I've seen: alphabetical, and then region and then alphabetical. I know it's always annoying to have to bring a book where 80% of the material was only useful during character creation or adventuring prepping, just so you can get to that one chart of herbs or something. One meant for the player, and one meant for the GM. Lastly, I'm a huge proponent of splitting up Settings Books into two.

If the book should be more of an in-game reference, then People>Things>Places>Ideas usually flows better, IMO. The layout is finished with the "ideas" section, which handles religion and magic. The "things" section would deal with setting-important gear, transportation, and communication concepts. So your "people" section will deal with races and/or cultures, then your "places" section moves onto regions and/or kingdoms. If the book is intended to be literary, or more fluff-focuses, you'll want to go with the general order of People>Places>Things>Ideas. It's also going to depend on if you intend the book to be useful as a reference during play, or logically ordered for another purpose (such as character creation). Details should include ABC, character profile, and build details relating to Pathfinder 2E.Then it's going to depend on your setting.
